- Back pain – As a volleyball player, there’s a lot of motion between passing and hitting the ball. If a player leans forward too much during these actions they may experience this type of injury.
- Tennis elbow – Volleyballs aren’t heavy, but they certainly aren’t light. When a player hits the ball it is applying pressure to the forearm. This pressure may lead to injuring their tendons and cause this type of tendinitis.
- Bursitis – A painful injury that occurs when the sac of fluids located around the muscles and tendons becomes irritated. A volleyball player may cause this injury by consistently hitting their knees on the hardwood gym floor.
When it comes to acute injury, acute injury refers to a trauma- sustained injury. This injury is not considered more severe, but it does need immediate attention. For most acute injuries it’s important to R.I.C.E. (Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation). Some of the most common acute injuries a volleyball player may face are the following:
- Sprains – Usually occurring for volleyball players in the wrist or the ankle, a sprain refers to a ligament stretching or tearing. A player may experience this from landing wrong during a jump or fall.
- Fractures – It’s important to remember that wrists are durable, but not invincible. A fracture refers to the breaking of the wrist’s/forearm’s bones. A volleyball player may experience this injury as a result of receiving a hard enough hit to the wrist or landing on it wrong.
- Hamstring Injury – This injury refers to an overload on the hamstring muscles, resulting in a strain or tear. A volleyball player may experience this injury from having weak glute muscles, tight hip flexors, etc.
