Common Orthopedic Injuries

Common Orthopedic Injuries
July 14, 2021AdminUncategorized

Orthopedic injuries include conditions that affect the musculoskeletal system. The musculoskeletal system consists of muscles, bones, joints, nerves, tendons, ligaments, and other connective tissues. Injuries to any of these parts may require you to seek a physical therapist, such as our specialist at Flowers Physical Therapy. Some common orthopedic injuries include acute injuries, arthritis, pinched nerves, and tendinitis. Physical therapy can help improve your quality of life by relieving pain. Continue reading below to learn more about the common orthopedic injuries that we treat at our office.

Acute Injuries

One example of an orthopedic injury that requires physical therapy includes acute injuries. Acute injuries are injuries that occur suddenly due to traumatic impact. Normally, acute injuries are caused by physical activity and are located in one part of the body. Some examples of acute injuries are the following:

  • Fractures.
  • Broken bones.
  • Dislocated joints.
  • Sprains.
  • Strains.

Arthritis

Arthritis is the inflammation, pain, stiffness, and swelling of the joints. Effects of arthritis consist of pain and loss of joint function. Physical therapy can help to relieve the effects of this common orthopedic injury. Some specific forms of arthritis can include:

  • Osteoarthritis.
  • Rheumatoid arthritis.
  • Psoriatic arthritis.
  • Gout.

Pinched Nerves

When a nerve or group of nerves become compressed or irritated, a pinched nerve forms. Symptoms such as numbness, tingling, burning, or pain can result from a pinched nerve. Pinched nerves can occur in many locations and are associated with sciatica and carpal tunnel syndrome. Some causes of pinched nerves can include the following:

  • Herniated/slipped discs.
  • Degenerative disc disease.
  • Stenosis (narrowing) of the spinal canal.
  • Repetitive use injuries.
  • Bone spurs or fractures.

Pinched nerves are unfortunately a common orthopedic injury, but they can be treated with physical therapy.

Tendonitis

Tendinitis is an overuse injury that commonly requires physical therapy. Tendinitis is caused by the inflammation of a tendon, a group of sturdy fibers that connects muscle to nearby bone. Older populations are more likely to face tendinitis. However, anyone can experience tendinitis.
