How Can Physical Therapy Help Stroke Victims?

How Can Physical Therapy Help Stroke Victims?
August 29, 2018Adminphysical therapist in Springfield GardensStrokeUncategorized

Having a stroke can change someone life. Since a stroke is an attack on the brain, strokes break connections that are vital between your brain and your muscles. This break almost always will cause some loss of movement or mobility. The loss does not always have to be permanent though. Physical therapy is extremely important to start during the early stages of recovery to help patients regain control over effective muscles. If you have recently suffered a stroke, Flowers Physical Therapy can help you during this recovery process. Call us today to make an appointment with our physical therapy near Springfield Gardens.

Impairments From a Stroke

Strokes are one of the leading causes of neuromuscular and motor impairment. During a stroke, blood flow is cut off to an area of the brain. This causes the brain cells in this area to be deprived of oxygen and they will begin to die. When the brain cells die, the abilities that are controlled in that area are lost. This causes neuromuscular and motor impairments, which can include:

    • Speech Skills –  Aphasia which is a loss of language skill. Aphasia will cause the patient to have trouble speaking.
    • Cognitive Skills – Impairment of thinking and reasoning abilities. This can lead to poor, judgment behavioral changes, and memory problems.
    • Motor Skills – Weakened muscles on one side of the body. This can affect coordination which will make it difficult to walk and perform other activities.
  • Sensory Skills – Having a stroke may affect the bodies ability to feel things such as heat, cold, or pressure.

Physical Therapy

Physical therapy is critical after a stroke. Physical therapy can help stroke victims regain skills that were lost from stoke. Rehabilitation often begins as early as 24 hours after having a stroke and will continue throughout the recovery process as relearning basic muscle movements take place. At Flowers Physical Therapy, our therapists will be able to create a specific regimen that will revolve around your specific goals and needs. If you have any questions, our physical therapy near Springfield Gardens can help you today.
