How Does Nutrition Affect Sports Performance?

How Does Nutrition Affect Sports Performance?
March 22, 2022AdminUncategorized

Sports performance can push your body to the edge, and without adequate nutrition in your diet, you may be hindering your progress. Since March is National Nutrition Month, now is the perfect time to evaluate your diet and make changes to meet the demands of your training and exercise. At Flowers Physical Therapy, we provide physical therapy in Rosedale to help you maximize your athletic performance and facilitate recovery. Continue reading to discover how nutrition can affect your sports performance.

How Does Nutrition Affect Sports Performance?

As an athlete, you progressively stress your body to advance in your sport. Recovery is an essential component of athletic performance. Eating a poor diet can make this recovery difficult or impossible. As you continue training, fatigue, stress, and metabolic waste can accumulate in your body. While there is no set diet for all athletes, your nutrition can affect your performance in the following ways:

  • Longer Recovery – During training, your body induces damage in your muscles, allowing you to rebuild stronger muscles and increase your strength, muscle mass, and endurance. After a workout, your body needs to recover to progress. If your nutritional needs are not met, your recovery may be prolonged.
  • Poor Performance – Athletic training requires a lot of energy, which comes from macronutrients like carbohydrates, protein, and fats. Without adequate macronutrients from your diet, your body won’t perform at an optimal level. Carbohydrates are the primary energy source for strength training, muscles break down protein for fuel during intense exercise, and endurance training consumes fats and carbohydrates. A proper diet can help you achieve peak performance levels.
  • Weight Changes – While weight changes may be the purpose of your training, unintended weight changes can occur with poor nutrition. You may lose muscle mass without proper nutrition or gain or lose body fat at an unhealthy pace.

Nutrition is an essential part of physical therapy in Rosedale. Our team will evaluate your condition and determine the appropriate program to help you achieve peak performance.
