Tennis elbow, also known as lateral epicondylitis, is an extremely painful condition caused by overuse of the tendons in your elbow. This is a very common injury for tennis players and any athlete who actively overuses their arm. However, people who are not athletes can also develop this condition. Professions that involve this type of movement can include plumbers, painters, and carpenters. If you have developed tennis elbow, Flowers Physical Therapy can help! Call today to make an appointment for our physical therapy in Rosedale.

What is Tennis Elbow?

Tennis elbow develops when the tendons in your elbow are stressed due to continuous movement of the wrist or arm. Overusing the tendons can cause tears and inflammation in muscles surrounding the elbow.

Causes:

While playing tennis is normally the main cause of this condition, there are other ways people can develop tennis elbow from daily activities.

For example:

    • Gardening
    • Sporting activities that involve high amount of throwing
    • Manual work involving repetitive lifting or turning of the wrist
    • Swimming
    • Typing
  • Knitting

Symptoms:

In most cases, tennis elbow will develop gradually. The pain normally starts mildly on the outside of the upper forearm and slowly worsens over time. Some of the common symptoms include:

    • Pain or burning in your elbow
    • Grip strength weakens
  • Pain when lifting or bending the arm

If you develop any of these symptoms, come receive physical therapy in Rosedale at Flowers Physical Therapy.

Treatment:

There are many ways to treat tennis elbow, including:

    • Physical Therapy- Physical therapy is one of the most common treatments of tennis elbow. Our physical therapy in Rosedale will help strengthen the muscles of the forearm with stretches and exercises.
    • Rest- When you first develop tennis elbow, it is important to take a break from the activity causing the tears and inflammation. This will allow time for the tendon to heal.
    • Ice- Icing your elbow will reduce swelling and inflammation.
  • Stretching– Stretching after performing the activity causing tennis elbow will help keep your muscles strong and reduce the risk of developing this condition.

At Flowers Physical Therapy, our team of experienced physical therapists will develop a treatment plan specific to you. If you are in need of physical therapy in Rosedale to help treat tennis elbow, contact us today!
